My Epson XP-540 works. Curiously with simple-scan and with xsane, but not with Imagescan provided by Epson. But thats another problem, image-scan scans but can't save the scanned image ... With Ubuntu 17.04 (using Sane 1.0.25) behaviour of imagescan was identical. I already reported this months ago Epson at https://github.com/utsushi to be exactly. Maybe Olaf Meeuwissen (Sane developer) someday will fix it.
Seems time that I should try what happens when I attach the XP 540 locally, then it needs another plugin than networkscan.
