OK, I found some workaround (based on post by Dragonmaster Lou: http
://ubuntu-utah.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=574426&page=2)
set in profile:
xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024
xrandr --output VGA-0 --right-of DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024
and in xorg.conf, in section "Screen":
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Virtual 2560 1024
Modes "1280x1024"
...
EndSubSection
And it works!
Disclaimer: it works for me - I'm not sure what effects it will cause
for other system configurations.
