hi Mario, thanks for your reply.  being a newbie I have a follow-up
question:

at http://gimp.org/unix/ there is no Ubuntu download and I am afraid of
messing up my system and its dependencies.

how long will it take for Ubuntu release a corrected update?  can I wait
until a fixed version becomes available through the software update
application?

should I uninstall GIMP completely in the meanwhile?

what is the SAFEST (if not necessarily fastest) way for me to deal with this
issue?
