This is my second attempt.
my installation sequence was as follows

I first of all ran the live version of ubuntu from the DVD  I'd created from 
the Ubuntu 17.10 ISO I'd downloaded.
Then I did the following after launching Gparted

1)  I shrank the windows partition with gparted.
2)  I created a 20 Mb partition to be renamed in the install process as on disk 
bios with gparted.
3)  I created a swap partition with gparted.
4)  I created an ext4 partition (400Gb) with gparted.
5)  Began the installation.
 
Everything seemed ok at first but then the message came up "installation failed"
