I'm using the nvidia-glx-new driver with desktop effects turned on. I
have a GeForce 7600 GT.

More often than not, video playback freezes when subtitles show up. Not
completely, though: frame rate drops to something like one frame in 15
seconds. There's also some horizontal tearing in the middle of the
screen. This happens both in windowed and fullscreen modes.

MPlayer does not have this problem, possibly because there the subtitle
resolution and the video resolution match. I don't know about GStreamer.

When I disabled desktop effects in the hope this would fix the problem,
all video playback was corrupted, showing just static memory garbage.
Reboot would have helped there. I switched it back immediately, and the
machine crashed - I couldn't even kill X. Only the mouse cursor moved.
