This just started happening to me after I switched from 16.04 to 17.10. I have a KVM switch (to switch my keyboard/mouse to multiple machines) and an HDMI switch (to switch the monitors). When I was running 16.04 I could switch the physical display away from the Linux box for days and the session was still live when I switched the monitor back to it. After installing 17.10 just switching the monitor trashes the session - making that switch a really expensive operation in terms of work context.
