Steve Holton, maybe you are using Ubuntu 14.04 and have some manually installed kernels, see Bug #1089195. Do updated instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RemoveOldKernels help to fix your system? (I suggest trying linux-purge, which I have written.)
