I remove my objections to the boot routine. It was a hardware problem. This morning things were so bad that I decided to switch monitors. I unplugged the VGA connectors from both monitors, and swapped them. The "new" configuration was much better, with no turning off of the monitor. The next step was to switch back. Again all was well. Conclusion: a hardware problem, probably one of the pins in the VGA connector was intermittent.
It just happened that the problem started when I upgraded to 17.10. I am happy that I can rely on Ubuntu as I have relied on it for years.
