Hey, I just picked up on this bug. I can confirm (and provide more
information for) this. I'm using Gutsy, just so you know. I installed
through repositories provided in Software Sources, and I tried to
install a splash screen using it. I first had to enable the splash
screen (since Gutsy disabled it I guess) by checking the "Show splash
screen at startup" checkbox. I then clicked Install, and selected the
appropriate tar.gz file. It crashed, but not before printing out some
much-needed information:
