Since the update did not work, I made a full new installation of Gutsy Gibbon. Then the system still did not recognize the resolution of the external monitor. But adding the monitor's resolution in the xorg.conf file solved the problem. Right now I am happy with Gutsy Gibbon again! New installation: hui, update pfui!
