I don't agree that this is a duplicate of 1639374, it also affects plain
Ubuntu distro, tested with both 16.04.3 and 17.10. The workaround on
askubuntu.com mentioned above worked for me, but for new users it would
be really good if there was a way to make this work out of the box.

Current user experience is a machine lockup after spending significant
time going through the installation process, which might cause lots of
folks responding "dump that linux, I'll stick with windows".
