The strange thing is that when the gnome power manager sensor for
dimming the screen is working (at least for that one magic moment) there
is also the small on-screen sign visible that tells you that the power
has been switched off and that the computer is now running in power save
mode. But even this sign only works from time to time on my Sony Vaio!
Very strange!! I have no idea if the sign for the gnome power manager
comes from the ACPI or only from the sony laptop module. It seems to me
that the way is ACPI -> sony laptop module -> gnome-power-manager, and
that if one of these steps fails to initialize you can flush your hope
for dimming right down the toilet. It would be nice to learn more about
the way the sony hotkeys (should) work.
