This affects me exactly the same way as described by Thomas. This seems to match a problem in Debian Stretch that also leads to a timeout through the Xorg based session of xrdp....I mention this in case it helps to diagnose the issue. This is a fresh installation of Ubuntu 17.10.
Kernel in use: 4.13.0-21-generic x86_64 All other software is fully up-to-date as of January 2, 2018.
