Similar problem here, but no error message is displayed, the applet just
doesn't appear. It may be unrelated, but this seems to have started
after I used the applet to set the graphic effects up to the highest
setting. After doing so I was having problems with window and/or menu
contents not getting drawn (the interiors were just black, but the
frames would get drawn ok) so I was going to step down the effects to
see if that changed anything, but I am unable to do that at the moment
as the applet will not open and I'm not sure how to make the changes
manually.
When I try to run it in a terminal I get the following:
