Thanks for the logs. In fact term.log tells that 2.6.20-16 was deleted by
itself:
Preparing to replace linux-generic 2.6.20.16.28.1 (using
.../linux-generic_2.6.22.14.21_amd64.deb) ...
Removing linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic ...
so I don't see why/how you removed it yourself afterwards.
The problem is that update-grub is run only at line 5681, but the new
initrd is made for the first time in line 6353. update-grub is never run
again after this.
