All this happens to be the result of the latest system upgrade to kernel
4.4.0-109.
Booting my Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS with kernel 4.4.0-109-generic freezes the system
in the graphical log-in screen. Typing in the correct password makes the screen
flicker (as during a change of the X system graphics settings) and the system
is back again in the log-in screen.
Choosing the 4.4.0-104 generic option in the GRUB menu allows you to log in,
but the system develops the above 'unattended-upgrade 9' error report.
