Public bug reported:

When booting kernel 4.13, the display corrupts after grub boot menu. The
problem persists with mainline kernel 4.14.13 but does not occur with
kernel 4.10 or 4.4.

I'm running Xenial i386 on EEEPC.

The kernel log shows "plane B assertion failure, should be off on pipe B but is 
still active". See attached dmesg excerpt.

It has a patch pending that others have confirmed working. Maybe this
patch should be ported to ubuntu. See both referenced issues.
