For what it's worth I retried the exact same installation options/setup
as this bug report, but with the network cable disconnected.  It worked
flawlessly.

After installation I connected the network cable, booted the machine,
then performed an apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.  Again, no
errors and it survived a reboot.

odd.  is the 17.10.1 desktop installer downloading something if it has a
network connection, even if the user doesn't check the box to download
updates during install?  Seems like the logical cause given the
circumstances I've experienced here.  If you want logs from my machine
that i installed successfully (with no network connection during install
phase) let me know what commands/files you'd like output from.
