Hi Christian,
xenial only has 2.15-1ubuntu1.1 which still uses a sysV init script and that
works on Xenial.
The version in artful might have an arbitrary amount of dependencies to its
systemd or other components - I don't think pulling that back to xenial is
reasonable.

I checked xenial and artful.
3.2.0-4ubuntu2 works on artful
2.15-1ubuntu1.1 works on xenial
Both as expected.

On artful which uses the service file I see this path:
PIDFile=/var/run/nagios/nrpe.pid
And the file is properly filled with the correct PID.

The pid is set by systemd, nagios doesn't need write access to it.

For the artful/xenial version hybrid I don't immediately see why it
would break, but it is neither supported nor recommended to do so :-/
