Public bug reported:

Installing Kate (on ubuntu 17.10, wayland) works fine. However, there's
a dependency that's going to cause difficulties, as follows:

kate -> plasma-framework -> libkf5notifications5 -> phonon4qt5 ->
phonon4qt5-backend-vlc -> libvlccore8

So Kate now indirectly depends on a VLC package. VLC is moving on, and
in version 4.0 installs libvlccore9. This gives a conflict since it
seems both versions of libvlccore cannot co-exist.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether two versions of such a
package should in principle be able to co-exist, but currently they
can't, which means Kate and VLC 4 conflict and cannot both be installed
at the same time from ppas.

I've got around this for myself by compiling and installing Kate locally
(not without minor problems with the run-time instructions for env.sh
which seem not to work exactly as specified).
