If you install anthy with additional languages, with "US English" as your primary language, you end up with a "locale" output similar to the following: $ locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LANGUAGE=en_US:de:ja LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC=en_GB.UTF-8 LC_TIME=en_GB.UTF-8 LC_COLLATE=C LC_MONETARY=en_US.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US.UTF-8 LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ALL= The LANGUAGE variable in this case is using the rules from https://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_node/The-LANGUAGE- variable.html When running "aptitude" or "apt-get" or "apt install", the messages that come back are in German. If you strace those commands, you'll see apt trying to search for an en_US or en catalog, finding none, and falling down to the 2nd language in the list: "de" or German. If you run: $ LANGUAGE="" apt-get update Then the messages come back in English, because the system's fallen back to the "C" locale. apt should also properly ship an en_US language catalog.
