Because of the way *NIX (and Ubuntu) handles disk and filesystem identification and automounting, there are a lot of different mechanisms or 'layers' in which bugs can crop up.
That said, I will use this bug to report that the 2.6.22-14 kernel in plain 32-bit 7.10 has serious issues with the floppy on my hardware: Athlon 3800+ x2 (thus SMP), Foxconn A690GM2MA-8KRS2H (AMD 690G chipset, AMD / ATI SB600 southbridge), floppy hooked up to the onboard controller. Attempting to mount will spin the disk (seek noise notably absent) but produce errors. dd'ing an image stands a good chance of freezing the machine. Previous kernels (2.6.20-??) appear to work properly, albeit at risk of unsolved stability issues plaguing that particular system. In other words, FAT floppies were mountable and usable, but, anecdotally, using Nautilus to 'cut' and 'paste' 600k of files to the disk wedged the machine when it went to commit them in one giant sync on unmount. I'll save other issues for other bugs, but I (unscientifically) wonder if many of the drivers for 'desktop' hardware present on that board are not really SMP-clean. Pepse3 above does not state whether he is using dual-core hardware or not. ** Summary changed: - Floppy Drive Doesn't Work in Kubuntu. + Floppy Drive Doesn't Work in Kubuntu (and Ubuntu) ** Tags added: 2.6.22-14 floppy kernel smp -- Floppy Drive Doesn't Work in Kubuntu (and Ubuntu) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152832 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
