Thank you for you detailed answer! The system firmware seems to be a bit buggy, I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually a firmware bug. I just don't quite understand yet, how the firmware bug was triggered by the OS update… and why this couldn't be solved by restoring secure boot to factory default?
The weird thing is, I've been using this notebook for more than a year now with Ubuntu 16.10, 17.04 and 17.10, no dual boot, and never had any trouble booting after I've added the shimx64.efi to trusted files on the very first install. Also, I've never touched boot settings anywhere except for the F2 menu on startup.
