Michael, can you run tcpdump to display the network traffic on your outgoing interface and then attempt a ping to a never-tried-before host. E.g., my interface is ppp0 so `sudo tcpdump -i ppp0 -n' in one window and then `ping -c 3 -n mail.troff.org' in another. The output should only be a few lines; the DNS request, the answer, and the ping echo and replies. Of course, if you haven't already got package tcpdump installed, this may be a bit of a problem.
