the '--basedir' option is always ignored

Got the following error when calling the 'mysql' command line client
Ago 08 10:40:33 hostname /etc/mysql/debian-start[2356]: ERROR 1045 (28000): 
Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
Ago 08 10:40:33 hostname /etc/mysql/debian-start[2356]: FATAL ERROR: Upgrade 
failed

Could you explain us the steps that led to this and provide the content of 
/var/log/mysql:
$ sudo cat /var/log/mysql/*
