For me the problem was that I had libgles2 installed instead of the alternative libgles2-mesa. gnome-session-bin depends on one or the other, but at some point, I got the wrong one. Maybe for ubuntu, the alternative dependency should be removed as libgles2 makes the system to fallback to llvmpipe
