I had the same problem, under Feisty I had compiled Pidgin and after the upgrade to Gusty I had only the MySpace protocol. Because pidgin looks plugins in the directory: /usr/lib/pidgin/ but there are installed in: /usr/lib/purple. I fixed the problem by sudo cp /usr/lib/purple/* /usr/lib/pidgin/ I have a /usr/lib/purple-2/ containing a lots of plugins too.
