I have the same problem, but I actually get an INVALID SCAN FREQ message on the black screen, presumably from the monitor (Hitachi CM772). Checked usplash.conf, and has 1024x768, well within the monitor capabilities (max 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz). So it may be a problem with the frequency setting, and not the resolution as such, which might explain why it sometimes disappears when reducing the resolution and other times not. Any idea of where the splash screen scan frequency is set?
