In short: When laptop display only mode (no external monitor) screen
stays black. However, when booting with external monitor everything
looks fine. usplash.conf tested with a) 1280x1024 and b) 1024x768. The
later would show usplash at shutdown correctly in "laptop mode" which is
missing, too, with a). a) was the default after I freshly installed
gutsy today.
I'll attach dmesg for "laptop mode" with b)
