Public bug reported:
Booting kernel 4.4.0-116.140 lands me in an ash shell with prompt
'initramfs'. keyboard and mouse USB fails, so that I can do nothing.
Error messages from module hid: 'unknown symbol __x86_indirect_thunk_XXX err
-22' and
'disagrees about version of __x86_indirect_thunk_XXX err -22, where XXX has 5
or 6 different 3-letter values.
I have gcc-5:i386 (5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.6, 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9),
which would be correct according to bug report #1750937. Since there are
no modules built by DKMS, there is no compilation involved in
installation.
I removed and reinstalled the kernel image and headers, but the problem did not
disappear:
Install: linux-headers-generic:i386 (4.4.0.116.122, automatic),
linux-image-generic:i386 (4.4.0.116.122, automatic),
linux-headers-4.4.0-116:i386 (4.4.0-116.140, automatic),
linux-image-extra-4.4.0-116-generic:i386 (4.4.0-116.140, automatic),
linux-headers-4.4.0-116-generic:i386 (4.4.0-116.140, automatic),
linux-generic:i386 (4.4.0.116.122), linux-image-4.4.0-116-generic:i386
(4.4.0-116.140, automatic)
Since I cannot boot into this kernel, I cannot generate a bug report,
and there are no syslog entries.
