Thank you! I just changed the sym-link for python in /usr/bin to point to python2.7 (again) and I restored pyclean to its previous state.
I tried Software Updater ; it still put up the same message. But then I re-ran apt-get -f install and it proceeded smoothly to a close. So I tried Software Updater again. Apparently, apt-get -f install fixed things, and S.U. ran to a successful completion as well.
