Hi,
the mainline kernel v4.4.121 works fine.
Please note, that with the installation of the hwe-16.04 kernel, also xserver
was updated to 1.19, so I can not say anything about the combination of kernel
v4.4.121 with the original xserver.

Now I have:
$ dpkg-query -l xserver-xorg-core* | grep '^ii'
ii  xserver-xorg-core-hwe-16.04 2:1.19.5-0ubuntu2~16.04.1 i386         Xorg X

$ dpkg-query -l linux-header* | grep '^ii'
