Make sure your system is up to date.
$ sudo apt update && sudo apt -y dist-upgrade
View the nvidia module name/version:
$ dkms list
Rebuild your nvidia module
$ sudo dkms remove ${nvidia-module-name}/${nvidia-module-version} -k
4.4.0-116-generic
$ sudi dkms install ${nvidia-module-name}/${nvidia-module-version} -k
4.4.0-116-generic
reboot and test.
