The kernel team process is that patches will always be committed from the most recent kernel first and then back to older kernels, so that no- one ends up with a regression if they upgrade to a more recent kernel. So if it is applied to Xenial it will be applied to Artful :) (FYI, it's already in the kernel that will be in Bionic next month.) I don't know what you're compiling with DKMS; are you able to do any test at all without it? Just testing that the machine boots and that you can ping someone would make me more comfortable.
