I can confirm the same problem on Gutsy. Memory consumption and CPU used to grow up to 60%-70% within less than an hour freezing the whole machine. I turned the vertical panel to horizontal and the problem is gone. Just like that. I didn't even have to reboot.
Another hint I would like to add is that when I first upgraded I had to slightly widen the vertical panel or icons would not draw properly. I don't know if it is a related or an unrelated bug.
