On my Thinkpad R52 with Intel i915 I've installed Gutsy Beta 1 (so now I am using Gutsy) with 'intel' driver and this issue does not occur anymore. After opening the lid, the screen almost instantly turns back on and is NOT garbled. So the new driver works for me! Thanks!
