To make the modem (Huawei E220) work automatically (on Gutsy):

Compile huaweiAktBbo and place it in your path. Then create the file:
/etc/udev/rules.d/50-huawei-e220.rules
and add the single line:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="1003", SYSFS{idVendor}=="12d1", 
RUN+="huaweiAktBbo"

If running
ls /dev/ttyUSB*
shows three devices the modem is working as it should. You can now confiugre it 
with Gnome/KDE-tools (or Wvdial if you need to set a PIN-code).
