Hi Simon, I think you can close this ticket, this is surely on old one :) I have to admit I do not have the log files ;)
Although I have experienced something similar the other day. I wanted to install lubuntu on a 256 MB machine and the installer kept crashing. I raised the memory to 512 and it was working, then set memory back to 256 and lubuntu was running happily. I did not try to set up swap space on the live installer that might have helped.
