whilst in the black screen state I switched to a TTY and ran ubuntu-bug nvidia-390 - I used the keep option to create the .apport file.

After purging and booting back with nouveau I ran "apport-bug apport .nvidia-driver-390.4lwinjii.apport" to report this issue.
