Also experienced this bug, with the Alternate CD installer of Ubuntu
7.10.  At first I thought maybe the NTFS filesystem was corrupted, so we
did a defrag, clean up temporary files, and force CHKDSK, and retried
the Ubuntu install, but with the same results.  After about a dozen
attempts with varies things, eventually I decided to say "do not use
this partition" so we could continue with the installation.  After the
system was installed, I checked the blkid and added the appropriate line
in /etc/fstab and it mounted fine, so it seems to be specific to how the
installer uses it.

you get a chance.
