That's a GPU lockup, but if your num lock / caps lock starts flashing,
it perhaps indictates a kenel panic. Can you check the output from dmesg
next time. (Or review back in the /var/log/kern.log).
As this started happening after a hardware upgrade, can you let us know
what components inside the computer were replaced / reseated in the
upgrade? The issue could be hardware related.
