Same here while upgrading KUbuntu 7.04 to 7.10 following the
instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades

/var/crash contains
-rw------- 1 root root 8809087 Oct 29 11:00 _usr_share_debconf_frontend.0.crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 212 Oct 29 11:00 debconf.0.crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 168 Oct 29 11:05 x11-common.0.crash

----- debconf.0.crash start -------------
ProblemType: Package
Date: Mon Oct 29 11:00:26 2007
ErrorMessage:
ErrorMessage: subprocess post-installation script killed by signal
(Segmentation fault), core dumped

Package: debconf
SourcePackage: debconf
----- debconf.0.crash end -------------
I rebootet and finished the upgrade procedure using apt-get:
apt-get install -f
apt-get dist-upgrade

I wish I had done it this way right from the start! All you have to do
is in sources.list replace "feisty" by "gutsy".

I wonder why nowadays people favor eye-candy frontend tools over the
commandline although the latter offesr the more robust solution. Even
the web page does not mention how to upgrade using apt-get. This is a
pity.
