Public bug reported:

Installing 18.04 beta 2 in place of 17.10 on an existing raid array.
Grub reports unable to install on a disk that is was already installed
on. The installer appeared to hang, but lights on the disk drives
continues to flash for a couple of hours. When all was quiet I quit out
of the installer script and received notification that it had crashed.

Same happened on another server yesterday while experimenting with
installing on zfs array - this too failed and I reverted to installing
18.04 on a single drive and then mounting the zfs pool
