8.40.4 is the last of the old driver code base that ATI was using. All driver releases beyond this point are on a new code base. Using this driver proved to be stable though, and worked fairly well.
8.41.7 is not something that should be backported in. It's only meant for HD series ATI cards (R5xx), and does not work with many others (nor does ATI claim that it supports all cards). 8.42 supports all cards, more stable, and has faster OpenGL performance, most notably in games and when running glx_gears. However, there's been a number of performance issues with Compiz running. (Choppy/Tearing Video in Xv, as well as slow scrolling in firefox to name some issues). Finally, the FireGL workstation cards are still not supported.
