I'm not sure what you mean with "video button on laptop"? Monitor switch
button (external/internal/both) on this Acer TM3040 series doesn't do
anything.

Crashes happen only when using dual screen mode. If only VGA or only
LVDS is used, everything works ok.

At the moment it seems that only totem crashes. But I can (almost) swear
that when reporting this bug, also Vlc crashed. More info below.

Anyway, some background & tests:

If VGA is plugged in when gdm starts, login screen appears on VGA. LVDS
only shows slice of the bottom of then login screen. If VGA is not
plugged in, login window appears normally on LVDS.

Because of all that, after logging in, I must go to proper dual screen
mode with:

xrandr --output VGA --off
xrandr --output LVDS --auto
xrandr --output VGA --above LVDS --auto

After that xrandr reports:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1824, maximum 1280 x 1824

When in dual screen mode and starting totem on LVDS or VGA => VGA goes blank
for a moment, then comes back again.

During this, totem outputs two lines of: JACK tmpdir identified as
[/dev/shm]

Totem to fullscreen mode, then fullscreen off => both screens blank for
a moment, then only VGA comes back, OR xorg dies, OR whole system
crashes.

Here's xrandr report after fullscreen off, when only VGA came back:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1824

When in totem is in fullscreen mode and quitting by pressing q => totem quits
normally, no crash or disappearing LVDS.

During these tests console got corrupted (showing only graphics from
xorg).

Using mplayer: start player on LVDS => video opens on VGA. Drag video to
LVDS and go to fullscreen mode => video uses VGA's resolution on LVDS
screen (ie. cropped picture). Mplayer fullscreen works, no crash, no
blanking, no disappearing screens.

Vlc worked just like mplayer, except that when going fullscreen on LVDS,
Vlc opens fullscreen video to VGA (while totem window stays on LVDS). No
crash etc.
