I only found this issue after a failed installation attempt, so
(apologies) I am short on detailed info. But I'm getting what looks
superficially at least just like this issue, installing to a Macbook Pro
(13", 2013). So no GeForce involved in my case.

I was booting from the Ubuntu 18.04 install iso on a small USB stick,
and installing to a (new) ext4 partition on an external SSD (GUID
partition map, with a couple of existing HFS+ partitions) mounted via
USB.
