I was eventually able to install kubuntu via the following: 1) format ssd with MS-DOS partitions (not GPT) 2) boot from usb in legacy mode 3) manually set up partitions - one ext4 and one swap (no efi partition)
Essentially these steps are an attempt to force legacy install and avoid the efi stuff.
