The "Screen and Graphics Preferences" and the "Screen Resolution
Preferences" in gnome's System menu erroneously showed the only
resolution options as 303Hz and 304Hz.

After I changed the monitor model in "Screen and Graphics Preferences", I
correctly got the refresh rate options 60Hz, 65Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz, 85Hz, and it
would let me test the refresh rates, but the "OK" button didn't actually make
the change. 70Hz was the highest rate that didn't have the pincushion
distortion.

If I re-opened "Screen and Graphics Preferences", it would show the correct
ViewSonic P95f+ monitor, but it would only show 303Hz and 304Hz as options.

"Screen and Graphics Preferences" added the modlines to the xorg.conf. When I
restarted xorg, it was running at 1600x1200, although the virtual desktop size
was 2048x1536. I was able to change the resolution in "Screen and Graphics
Preferences" from 2048x1536 to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Interestingly, the "Screen and Graphics Preferences" removed these lines from
the Seciont "Device"
  Option "CRT2HSync" "30-110"
  Option "CRT2VRefresh" "50-160"

There must be something else that "Screen and Graphics Preferences" is doing
differently than dpkg-reconfigure that gets it to work. Since the "Screen and
Graphics Preferences" xorg.conf now works, I was worried that the
xorg.conf from dpkg-reconfigure only didn't work because it had a slightly
lower horizontal and vertical sync rate. However, when I used these configs it
still didn't work:
    Section "Monitor"
            Identifier "Generic Monitor"
            Option "DPMS"
            HorizSync 30-110
            VertRefresh 50-160
    EndSection

After looking at the diffs between the configs, I figured that the following
change is what fixed the xorg.conf without resorting to CRT2HSync and
CRT2VRefresh.

 Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE]"
+ Boardname "ati"
+ Busid "PCI:2:0:0"
        Driver "ati"
+ Screen 0
+ Option "MergedFB" "off"
- BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
 EndSection

It turns out that
        Option "MergedFB" "off"
fixes the issue with the xorg.conf generated by debconf.
