i have the same problem. the only problem with it is, i want to be able to use the visual effects. i know, i'll just have to live without them. but here's the strange thing:
I was using visual effects (in 7.10), and they worked just fine. I must have done something to mess them up. The only thing I did was set it so ubuntu knows that i'm using a samsung monitor. after i changed that, it got messed up. I even changed it back, but nope, no luck.
