Public bug reported:

After a fresh Install of Ubuntu 7.10 with ether the i386 Desktop CD or
the i386 Alternate Install CD to my HP-Laptop DV9225us. (I tried both)
get a black screen on first boot any every boot after.

My laptop uses a built-in NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 Display Adapter with
256mb of RAM.

The fix/work around was to use the recovery mode and then to type INIT 3
to bring up x-windows. (Discovered by accident.) this was with a
unchanged/unedited /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Then to install the latest
NVIDA accelerated graphics Driver from the Restricted Drivers window
while in gnome. Then to reboot with new driver.

I can now use X-windows and gnome. But when I try to use any of the
system-consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1 thru Ctrl-Alt-F7) I get a blank screen
unless I take off any vga=nnn statements inside of /boot/grub/menu.lst

I would like to use vga=792. The i386 Desktop installer CD shows VGA
modes up to 1024x768x32bit = 792 for this laptop. But this machine will
not take any modes greater then 640x480x8bit.

I also have the very same problem with a AMD-ATI X1050 display adapter
256mb ram on a Compaq Desktop machine.

I'm using Kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
